The new water treatment process will process up to 60 million liters of water per day, with a provision for upgrading to 75 mega liters when required treating the water affected by elevated iron and manganese levels, the presence of algae and dirty water after rain in the catchment.
The plant will use a microfiltration process to filter water drawn into the dam from the Manning River before it makes its way into the reticulation system by using fine polymer membranes that will remove cryptosporidium, giardia and other microorganisms without the need for chemicals.
Water from the new plant that will reuse all rainwater captured on the site and recycle the treated effluent from the onsite sewerage system as underground irrigation will be distributed from Coopernook in the north to Tarbuck Bay, south of Forster.
The construction of the new fully automatic membrane filtration plant that has been designed to be monitored by advanced technology has spanned several years, with ground first broken on the site in 2007.
