The government will provide financial support to local authorities, associations of towns, economic companies and private entrepreneurs to construct and upgrade sorting stations and treatment facilities for the organic municipal waste (composting facilities and facilities for anaerobic digestion).
Financial support will also help local authorities to finance purchase of bins for sorting the waste into two streams (bins for public areas and for residences) and buy waste collection vehicles for collecting the waste which was separated at source.
In addition, the funding will be used for renovation and adaptation of bin storage areas in residential buildings in a local authority, for local activity targeted at information and education and facilitation of the switch to separation of waste at source during the transition period.
Some half a million residents are expected to take part in the separation of waste at source program in the first phase of the plan (end of 2013), bringing about the recycling of some 150 thousand tons of household waste per year.
Environmental Protection minister Gilad Erdan said that this major financial support package will accelerate the establishment of the infrastructure needed to implement the recycling and waste separation revolution.
