The deal was agreed as a part of a summit between French President Francois Hollande and South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma, reports Reuters.
In an effort to decrease its dependance on coal-fired power plants, the South African government intends to invest $5bn on clean energy in the coming years.
Presently, the nation produces 85% of its electricity from coal-fired plants.
Pretoria has also committed to restrict nation’s greenhouse gas emissions, which rank as the highest on the continent.
South Africa plans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by one third in the next decade.
