The 300MW Kay wind farm in Kay County, Oklahoma, which is constructed by Apex Clean Energy, is expected to start the construction in 2015 and begin output in late 2016.
Apex Clean Energy president Mark Goodwin said that the company is very pleased to be working with Westar, and it looks forward to a strong long-term relationship moving forward.
"The Kay project will bring clean energy, at a great value, to Westar and its customers," Goodwin added.
Arkansas City manager Nickolaus Hernandez said that when construction starts, Arkansas City likely see a boost in its economy from the local hiring, as well as the presence of other construction workers.
"The Kay Wind project will bring significant economic benefits to the people of Arkansas City for decades to come," Hernandez added.
Currently, Westar Energy has around 700MW of renewable power capacity in its portfolio, evwind reports.
Westar Energy CEO Mark Ruelle said that for the first time, the company has been able to add renewable energy at a cost comparable to its other energy resources.
"In addition, the project will bring about $90m to the Kansas economy during construction and provide millions more in ongoing economic benefits," Ruelle added.
