
Under the $11m contract, ABB will be responsible for the designing, engineering, supply and installation of the substation extensions, including switchgear, transformers, control and protection systems as well as ancillary equipment.
The contract scope includes 11 units of 60 megavolt-ampere (MVA) transformers, high-voltage air-insulated switchgear for eight substations, and high-voltage gas-insulated switchgear for one substation.
It also includes the replacement works and control systems for uprating the transformers in three other substations.
The work is expected to help strengthen reliability and improve efficiency of Java-Bali transmission and distribution networks in order to meet increasing power demand.
PLN, which is targeting a country electrification rate of over 95% by the end of the decade, intends to provide 35,000MW of additional power supply by 2019.

Planned to be completed in 2017, the project is backed by the Asian Development Bank.
According to a report by The Economist, demand for electricity in Indonesia is estimated to increase around 9% annually over the next decade.
