The demonstration will be performed on a medium-sized boiler burning a blend of imported coals and petroleum coke, a by-product of the oil refining process. Chemical injection is scheduled to commence during the third quarter of 2008.

The company’s Fuel Chem technology revolves around the unique application of chemicals to improve the efficiency, reliability, fuel flexibility and environmental status of combustion units by controlling slagging, fouling, corrosion, opacity and acid plume, as well as the formation of sulfur trioxide, ammonium bisulfate, particulate matter, CO2 and nitrous oxides.

This technology, in the form of a customizable Fuel Chem program, is reportedly being applied to over 95 combustion units burning a wide variety of fuels including coal, heavy oil, biomass, and municipal waste.

John Norris Jr, president and CEO of Fuel Tech, said: This announcement represents the first targeted in-furnace injection application on a Canadian coal-fired electric utility unit. The objective of this demonstration is twofold. First, we plan to alleviate fouling problems currently arising from the presence of sulfur and vanadium in the petroleum coke feedstock, thereby increasing uninterrupted megawatt generation. Second, we intend to enhance our client’s fuel flexibility and economics by enabling the introduction of lower cost, lower quality indigenous coals into the fuel mix.
