The Liberal government has stated that all coal-fired stations must shut down or change to cleaner fuels by 2014, in spite of strong opposition from the Sarnia-Lambton area. In 2008, legislation was passed to slowly decrease coal-fired production.
Gruetzner stated that a slow decrease in the usage of fossil fuels during the economic crisis has resulted in OPGI reevaluating its business proposal.
LGS employees were intimated that different alternatives are being examined, which include the probable transformation to natural gas, biomass fuels or unit closures.
Gruetzner stated that no additional details are being revealed.
He added “It’s premature to say anything more. We understand folks on the shop floor and the community are very interested in this and when we are in a position to disclose information, we will.”
Nearly 400 people are employed at the Lambton Generating Station. Ontario’s other three coal stations are situated at Nanticoke, Atikokan and Thunder Bay.
