Based on smart metering and home energy management technology, the group would jointly execute an energy management system, which would facilitate 500 selected households to have a better insight into their energy consumption and help in changing their electric usage. As a result of the pilot program, it is expected that there would be 14% CO2 reduction and the customers would save the energy costs.

Using the intelligent IT systems and well-protected web technology, Nuon and IBM would develop the applications for the energy management system. IP-based home energy management solutions, handled by Cisco, helps in enabling secured connectivity between household appliances and the energy system.

IBM and Cisco, through this project, focuses on demonstrating how intelligence throughout the electrical grid can reduce outages and faults, improve responsiveness, handle current and future demand, increase efficiency and manage costs.

Guido Bartels, general manager of IBM’s Global Energy & Utilities industry, said: Smarter energy initiatives are foundational for other critical infrastructure systems that make up a city–this project will enable the City of Amsterdam to leverage integrated, intelligent and interconnected technologies to transform their systems and optimize the use of finite resources.

Marthin de Beer, senior vice president of Cisco’s Emerging Technologies Group, said: Giving the citizens of Amsterdam more information and better control over their energy use will cut down on costs and consumption as well as reduce their overall impact on the environment. With this pilot, we hope to demonstrate how smart and connected communities can be more energy conscious and more green.

In Amsterdam the energy management pilot has been realized with the help of various program partners housing corporations Far West and Ymere, Home Automation Europe, Amsterdamse Innovatie Motor, the University of Amsterdam, Grid Operator Liander and ROC Amsterdam. The European Fund for Regional Development has co-funded the pilot program.
