The synchronization of the electricity network consists of the first grid of cables at Al-Fadhili in Saudi Arabia, linked to Kuwait in Al-Zour, as well as Salwa in Qatar. Saudi Arabia has conducted trial power transfers with Qatar and Kuwait.
The first stage consists of operating the first circuit of marine cables linked between Bahrain and the main network in Saudi, through Qatar and Kuwait, which will be followed by the synchronization process between networks of Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait. The Saudi network is linked to the GELA network.
By 2011, the three final stages of the Gulf electricity linkage project would be completed. The Gulf countries expecte that the power connection project with an investment of $1.4 billion would support them to the rising power demand and avoid outages.
The United Arab Emirates was due to connect to the grid in 2011, and Oman also intends to join the grid. Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain signed a power trading agreement.
