In Kenya, the company generates 77% of the total power requirement of 1,296MW. Most of the company’s power generation is by hydroelectric dams. The company has closed one of its stations due to drought that has depleted water levels.
The company in a newspaper advertisement, said: “To address the increasing power supply-demand imbalance, KenGen has been mandated … to construct and commission a 110-120 MW thermal power plant on a fast track basis. It is intended to develop the project under an Engineering Procurement and Construction or turnkey contract basis and that the plant would be operational by end of 2010.”
The company stated that it has began to seek for contracting a supplier and installer of the generator sets.
The new facility would be constructed in the coastal city of Mombasa, which is near to an existing plant generating 60MW by turbines turning on gas and another plant with a capacity of 75MW using diesel-fired generators.
Kenya intends to increase environmentally-friendly power generation by adding 2,000MW of electricity from coal, wind, geothermal and clean coal sources.
