Sharyland is a public electric utility based in Texas while BPUB manages and controls municipally owned electric, water and wastewater systems in Brownsville.
BPUB general manager and CEO said that the Cross Valley project not only brings needed reliability and ensures economic growth in Brownsville.
"With this project, we can finally provide the electric infrastructure necessary to serve normal demand growth and to attract new industrial customers to the Port of Brownsville," said Bruciak.
The Cross Valley project will require the construction of a new double circuit 345 kilovolt (kV) line will travel approximately 106 miles and a new 138 kV line running approximately 12 miles.
Sharyland and BPUB jointly proposed the Cross Valley project back in May 2011 following a two-year study.
The utilities will work with all stakeholders as they prepare to submit an application to the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) to amend Sharyland’s certificate of convenience and necessity to approve the project.
The project is expected to be complete and in service by the beginning of 2016, pending approval from PUCT.
