The unit 2 was temporarily shut down on 30 August to allow station personnel to work on water tubes located inside the condenser, which converts leftover steam used to spin the turbine back into water that is reused to make more steam to power the turbine.

Experts at the power plant also performed other maintenance activities when the unit 2 was offline; during that time unit 3 of the nuclear generating station provided electricity.

The Dresden Generating Station has three units of which two operating units have the potential to generate 1,700MW of electricity, enough to power about two million average homes.

Unit 1 of the nuclear station was retired in 1978.

US-based power generator, Exelon has about 35,000MW of owned capacity comprised of clean and low-cost power generation fleets.
