Construction of the project began in 2005 with an estimated investment of $2.5bn, reported Electric Light and Power.

Five of the turbines had been earlier connected to the grid, incrementally over the course of the construction.

The project has thus far contributed about 11400GWh electricity to the grid, bringing back $55m into the construction of the project.

The Son La project includes a 453ft by 300ft concrete dam that impounds the Da River in northern Vietnam.
