Honeywell has been given orders by the NRC on safety measures regarding its Metropolis uranium conversion plant, which has stopped uranium conversion since May.
The firm had shut down the conversion at Honeywell Metropolis Works, after the federal regulators found problems within the facility that could cause public harm in the event of a natural disaster.
The officials showed concern that an earthquake or tornado may breach the plant, causing the release of the chemical uranium hexafluoride.
NRC’s Region II administrator Victor McCree commented, "These measures ensure the continued safety of the people who work at Honeywell as well as those who live nearby."
