A total of 85m of reservoir quality sands has been encountered in the well, claimed the company.

Northern Petroleum will drill the next three wells of this four well program to target some of the greater undrilled areas.

Northpet Invetments Limited, jointly owned by Northern Petroleum and Wessex Exploration in a 50-50 partnership, holds a 2.5% interest in the well.

With 45% stake, Shell is the operator of the well while Tullow owns 27.5% and Total has 25% interest in it.

Northern Petroleum managing director Derek Musgrove said, "We are looking forward to completing the four well drilling programme, each well of which will provide vital information in unlocking this prospective new oil province."
