At the same time, the plant will be expanded into a center for global research and development in high-voltage switchgear engineering.
Siemens Energy Sector CEO Wolfgang Dehen said that this is a clear, long-term commitment to Berlin as an industrial and research location.
"Full-scale modernization will enable the plant to meet the challenges of the future as a flagship despite tough global competition," Dehen said.
The modernization plan envisages construction of two new factory shops, complete replacement of existing production lines on the premises, and improved logistics for short-distance access and movements.
The components manufactured at the plant are used for power grids, and the modernization project is expected to be completed in 2015.
