All of the necessary consents have been secured for Butendiek, which is a 80-turbine wind farm in development, planned for a site 34km from the coast of Germany.

The consideration to be paid by wpd will be determined by the future progress of the development.

SSE finance director Gregor Alexander said that the company has a flexible approach to the development of its wind energy capacity, with acquisitions and disposals both being considered to optimize the portfolio.

"Our strategy means we prioritize investments in the UK and Ireland," Alexander said.

"As a supporter of EU renewable energy targets we wish wpd well in taking the Butendiek development forward."
