Associated Mine Workers Union of Zimbabwe president Tinago Ruzive was quoted by Bloomberg as saying, "Their hoist cage plunged about 80 meters (262 feet) into a pool of water."

"Operations at the mine have been suspended," he added.

Ruzive said, "This is tragic but we are yet to establish whether this is a human error or a problem with the equipment."

No accidents have occurred in the past at the Golden Valley mine, which is located 160 km west of the Zimbabwe capital Harare, reported Reuters.

According to Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe figures, 35 miners were dead in mining accidents in the southern African nation last year due to non-compliant safety standards.
