The firm is now part of the Masdar-led consortium, which is building the third phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar park.
The 16km² 800 photovoltaic plant will be developed in three stages, including one 200MW phase and two 300MW phases.
The 200MW phase A project is currently under development, which is expected to complete by April next year.
The 300MW phase B is slated to be operational in April 2019, while the final 300MW phase is expected to be operational in April 2020.
Dubai’s solar park is expected to have a capacity of 5,000MW by 2030 with an investment of about $14bn (AED50bn).
According to EDF, the project was awarded in 2016 at a price of 2.99 US cents per kilowatt-hour. Once operational, the project will eliminate 6.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum.
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) MD and CEO HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said: "We are happy to see more international companies such as EDF joining the Masdar-led consortium for the 800 megawatt (MW) third phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar park, which will be constructed based on the IPP model to achieve sustainable development.”
EDF Group CEO and chairman Jean-Bernard Lévy said: "With construction of phase three now well under way, we are proud to bring EDF Group into the consortium realising what will be the largest solar power plant in the world on completion, and to benefit from EDF Energies Nouvelles’ extensive international experience in renewable energy deployment, particularly in emerging markets.”
