New York City’s attorney general Andrew Cuomo was quoted by Reuters as saying that as a part of the settlement, the oil company is required to undertake a comprehensive cleanup of its Greenpoint facility in Brooklyn, which includes oil floating on top of the water table and contaminated groundwater and soil

In 2007, over 17 million gallon oil was spilled for which the city had sued Exxon Mobil and the settlement resolves that lawsuit, but the final approval from a federal judge is still required.

The news agency said that Greenpoint was an industrial hub for shipbuilding, iron making and refining before World War II.

The settlement was filed in US district court in Brooklyn.
