Under the $30m contract, ABB will design, supply and commission 550kV GIS type ELK-3, a compact and modular solution that offers increased reliability and safety.

ABB Power Products division head Bernhard Jucker said: "ABB has supplied GIS to several PSE&G projects and we are delighted to work with them once again.

"Our compact GIS technology will help strengthen the transmission network in the region and facilitate reliable supply of electricity to residential and commercial customers."

PSE&G is investing $4bn to upgrade its electricity infrastructure between 2014 and 2016 in order to meet electricity demand.

In addition to strengthening transmission infrastructure in New Jersey, the gas-insulated switchgear controls, protects and isolates electrical equipment to boost the reliability of power supply.

The compactness, reliability and robustness make the switchgear an ideal solution in urban areas with harsh environmental conditions and where space is limited.
