According to the Moscow arbitration court ruling, the firm’s Moscow refinery has been leaking oil and petroleum products into the ground since 2007 as well as dumping oil directly into the Moscow River, reports Gazeta.ru.
The concentration of hazardous chemicals released by the refinery into the drainage pipe had exceeded even the maximum permissible levels by 44 times, according to the report.
Earlier, Gazprom Neft said it had upgraded the pollution prevention systems of the refinery as per the requirement of another court ruling last year.
The refinery, earlier this month, was considered as the source of acrid smog, which causes respiration problems, reports The Moscow Times.
The Moscow refinery, which has an installed annual capacity is 12.15 million tons, caters to approximately 40% of the requirements in the Moscow region.
