The company said that 284 of the 748 fuel assemblies will be replaced and numerous safety inspections will be conducted while the unit is off line.
Preventative maintenance to ensure continued safe and reliable operations will be performed, including replacing several control rod blades, rewinding the generator and testing more than 100 valves.
According to the company, some 1,000 temporary contractors and FENOC employees from the company’s other nuclear plants will supplement the Perry workforce during the outage.
The unit operated safely and reliably since the completion of its last refueling in May 2009, generating more than 19.2 million MWh of carbon-free electricity.
