The news agency reported that the EU assembly wants the minimum tax to be hiked to E359 by 2015 from E302 for 1,000 liters of diesel fuel, to prevent trucks seeking cheaper diesel from making detours and causing damage to the environment.
Only five countries are exempt from the tax hike as they will get an additional year to raise their level of taxation to that of other members, according to the Associated Press.
The news source noted that the EU plan to raise the minimum tax on diesel will face tough opposition from many EU member states where the tax is lower.
