NACF is designing a centrifuge based processor that should effectively separate oil from water and return the water to the Gulf while retaining the oil.
The company said that centrifuge technology is already widely in use for separation of materials in the oil industry. As materials spin within a centrifuge, heavier materials gravitate to the outer circumference of the centrifuge, while lighter materials remain closer to the center. Since water is lighter than oil, this allows centrifuges to successfully separate waters and oils.
Maurice Stone, CEO of National Clean Fuels, said: “Our equipment should allow oil contaminated water to be cleaned in place. This system is being designed to draw contaminated water into the processor, separate the oil from the water and return clean water to its source. We expect this technology to be highly effective at cleaning contaminated water from marshes and estuaries in the Gulf.”
