Salamander noted that the discovery well on the Gurame structure was drilled in 1968 and the structure was subsequently appraised by three additional wells between 1968 and 1969, all of which encountered oil and gas.

The well is being drilled using the Ensco-1 barge mounted rig and is programmed to reach a depth of approximately 2,900m. Salamander has a 22.5% interest in the Seruway production sharing contract (PSC).

James Menzies, Salamander’s CEO, said: The Gurame structure is the latest of a number of undeveloped discoveries that Salamander is returning to appraise as part of its appraisal and exploration program in 2008. With rising gas prices across Indonesia and especially in North Sumatra, these opportunities represent a potentially attractive and low risk means of generating value.
