The new substations will power a 444km long high-speed Haramain rail line currently under construction.
ABB will design, supply, install and commission the gas-insulated switchgear by the middle of 2013.
The substations are owned and operated by the Saudi Electricity Company, the country’s national power utility.
ABB claims that the gas-insulated switchgear offers high reliability, ease of operation, low maintenance costs and environmental benefits.
ABB power products division head Bernhard Jucker said the equipment will facilitate the reliable and efficient supply of electricity to power the new rail network.
