The mine is located in the east Kimberley region of Western Australia and it has an average annual production rate of 20 million carats per year.
The latest in block caving technology used by the company for the mine is touted to be the first of its kind in the state.
Rio Tinto diamonds and minerals chief executive Alan Davies claimed that the Argyle is a potential mine citing the production of
some spectacular diamonds and also it is said to have had delivered many benefits to the local region.
"The new Argyle underground mine has allowed us to extend the life of this iconic asset for Rio Tinto and Western Australia," said Davies.
Over the last 25 years, the Argyle mine has produced nearly 800 million carats of rough diamonds including world’s rarest pink diamonds.
