The latest incident brings to light the difficulties of the decontaminating and decommissioning project of the nuclear power plant, reports Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The sensors, which were attached to a gutter that discharges rain and ground water from the nuclear plant to a nearby bay, detected the water leak with highly radioactive contamination.
The contamination levels of the leak were reportedly up to 70 times higher than the facility’s existing radioactive rate.
Following this detection, the gutter has been closed to prevent further leak into the ocean.
A company spokesman said that the contamination levels have been decreased steadily throughout the day by about 10 to 20 times more than usual.
Fortunately, emergency inspections of the tanks storing the nuclear waste water did not show any further abnormalities.
AFP quoted the company spokesman as saying: "With emergency surveys of the plant and monitoring of other sensors, we have no reason to believe tanks storing radioactive waste water have leaked.
"We have shut the gutter (from pouring water to the bay). We are currently monitoring the sensors at the gutter and seeing the trend."
