Electricity generation at the 600MW Shiroro dam, Nigeria's second largest hydro plant, has come to a halt as a result of low water levels.

The river Kaduna, which supplies the dam with much of its water, has suffered from low runoff for more than six months, forcing the National Electric Power Authority to gradually shut down the plant’s generation units.

The Shiroro dam, located in Niger State, was commissioned in June 1990 but has recently been refurbished.
