Under the €12m contract, Alstom will upgrade two turbines, each with 232MW capacity, and the auxiliary subsystems at the lignite-fired power plant.

The company will modernize low, intermediate and high pressure units of the turbines.

The contract scope also includes upgrade of the turbines’ subsystems including safety and control, gland steam, jacking and lube oil and turbine drain systems.

Alstom said that the renovation process will begin with a turbine unit purchased by Mátra from another power station. Once renovated, the unit will replace the equipment in Block V, which will then be serviced to replace the one in Bloc IV.

This will reduce the production outage time to 66 days from around 90 days taken if the blocks are shut down for the entire renewal time.

The works on the turbines will be carried out at Alstom’s facilities in Mannheim and Berlin, Germany as well as in Birr, Switzerland.

Local service team of Alstom will be responsible for the field works, engineering, quality control and project management.

Mátra Power Plant director András Giczey said: "It (the renovation) will allow for a more cost efficient operation as well as increased availability.

"Thanks to the increased energy supply security of the power plant, Mátra Power Plant will continue providing a significant share of the domestic energy production."

The power plant supplies electricity to approximately one million households, and accounts for 21% of the total energy production in the country.
