Representing the first license generated by TransData’s Smart Meter Patents since the company started enforcing its intellectual property, the agreement covers technology that was initially invented in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and deployed in the mid-1990s.
The technology is directed towards digital electric meters equipped with an internal wireless communication circuit and antenna, that enables electric meter circuitry within the meter for wireless communication.
TransData counsel attorney Jamie McDole said, "This new licensing agreement further exhibits the significant advancement TransData’s patents provide and their importance to the manufacture and operation of smart meters."
The US District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma, has last month ordered that the patents should be construed in a manner consistent with the constructions offered by TransData.
TransData had filed a patent infringement litigation against a group of the US’s largest electric utilities in October 2010.
Defendants included CenterPoint Energy Houston Electric, Oncor Electric Delivery Company, Texas-New Mexico Power Company, Denton Municipal Utilities, San Diego Gas & Electric Co, Denton County Electric Cooperative, Alabama Power Company, Georgia Power Company, and Mississippi Power Company, Oklahoma Gas & Electric Co., Tri-County Electric Coop, and Wisconsin Power & Light Co.
