Named Roy E. Hansel, the new substation will replace and be built adjacent to the company’s existing Kissimmee Amtrak SunRail station in Florida, US.
Covered by a Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) gas insulated design, much of the new substation and supporting equipment will be housed inside a building to minimize the visual impact, unlike the open-air design of the current substation.
The existing transmission lines and distribution feeders will enter the substation underground enhancing overall aesthetics, while minimizing some of the exposure to outages from animal life.
KUA board chairman Reginald Hardee was quoted by AroundOsceola as saying that, ”this new facility has the latest technology, is more cost effective to run, and we can take the old equipment and use it at our other substations.”
Established in 1901, KUA is Florida’s sixth largest community-owned utility powering 64,000 customers in Osceola County, US.
