GE Energy is to supply a 209FB combined-cycle gas turbine system to Spanish utility Iberdrola for a new, 858 MW power plant to be built in Castellon, north of Valencia in Spain.

GE will supply two Frame 9FB gas turbine-generators, one GE D11 steam turbine, three 330H generators and two heat recovery steam generators, as well as technical support during construction, commissioning and testing.

The gas turbines will be manufactured shipped in August with the Castellon plant scheduled to begin commercial operation in February 2008.

Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the project will be Iberinco of Madrid, Spain, a fully owned subsidiary of Iberdrola.

In related news, a GE 9FB is also to be used for the expansion of Riga Thermal Power Plant II, in Latvia. The new combined-cycle block will add approximately 420 MW of generation plus approximately 270 MW of thermal heat to the Riga district heating network.

Owned by Latvenergo, the Riga plant supplies hot water for district heating in the city of Riga as well as electricity for the Latvian and Baltic regions.

The lead contractor for the expansion is Iberdrola Ingenieria y Construccion. The equipment is scheduled to be shipped to the project site in December with commercial operation planned by June 2008.

GE will also supply auxiliary equipment and technical assistance during the installation phase.
