The company has installed gear units, generators, turbine governors and a specially designed cooling water system. The upgrades have increased the power plant capacity by 10% to 11MW.
The project also involved upgrading electromechanical equipment of the existing three Kaplan bulb turbines and construction of a structurally-identical power unit in the main powerhouse at the facility.
The three existing vertical power units have also been replaced with two new flood relieve gates.
Operated by Switzerland’s state-owned energy group Axpo, the facility will generate approximately 64GWh a year, to serve around 17,000 households.
Axpo had decided to upgrade the hydro plant following its concession expiration in 2011.
Axpo project manager Rolf Geissberger said: "As a result of the upgrades we have increased the capacity of the existing bulb turbines by more than 25%, primarily due to the significantly higher water flow through the turbines."
Commissioned in 1920s, the hydropower facility is licensed to generate electricity until the end of 2074.
