The Vesterhav Nord and Vesterhav Syd offshore wind farms are being developed by Swedish multinational power company Vattenfall in the Danish North Sea.

The two wind farms will have a combined capacity of 344MW.

In September 2016, Vattenfall won the Danish Near Shore Wind Tender (DNS) for the two sites. The company received permission from the Danish Energy Agency to begin construction of Vesterhav Nord and Vesterhav Syd wind farms in December 2020.

The final investment decision (FID) on the project was made in December 2021, with construction commencing in 2022.

The two wind farms are expected to begin production by the end of 2023.

Overall, the combined project involves an investment of €769m. Once complete, the two wind farms will generate 1,569GWh of electricity annually, boosting Danish wind power capacity by 10.7%.

Location of Vesterhav Nord and Syd Wind Farms

Vesterhav Nord is planned to be located approximately 5.5-8.4km offshore, south of Thyboron. On the other hand, Vesterhav Syd will be installed 9-10km offshore, north of Hvide Sande.

Vesterhav Nord and Vesterhav Syd will encompass an area of 40km2 and 37km2 respectively.

Vesterhav Nord and Syd Infrastructure

The Vesterhav Nord and Syd wind farms will be equipped with 41 Siemens Gamesa 8.4MW SG 8.0-167 DD turbines. These turbines have a rotor diameter of 167m.

The Vesterhav Nord, with a total installed capacity of 176MW, will have 21 wind turbines, while the 168MW Vesterhav Syd will feature 20 turbines.

The offshore wind turbines will be installed on 77m long monopiles, each weighing around 622 tonnes at water depths of up to 20m.

The transition pieces (TP), between the monopiles and the turbines, will have a height of 22.5m and weigh 260tonnes.

The operations and maintenance of the offshore wind farms will be executed from a new service facility at Hvide Sande Port.

Electricity generated by the two wind farms will be enough to meet the annual consumption of more than 350,000 Danish households.

Power Transmission

The wind power produced by the two wind turbines will be transported by submarine cables to shore and fed into the Danish power grid.

The two wind farms will use 60kV cables to transmit power to the onshore substation. Vesterhav Nord will feed the electricity to the grid via high-voltage substation at Idomlund and Vesterhav Syd through Stovstrup.

Contractors Involved

Orbicon, a Danish multidisciplinary engineering consulting firm which was acquired by WSP in 2019, prepared the 2020 environmental impact assessment report for the project.

In August 2021, Hellenic Cables won the contract for the design, manufacturing, testing, and supply of approximately 70km 66kV XLPE insulated inter-array cables and associated accessories for Vesterhav Nord and Syd offshore wind farms project.

In November 2021, Bladt Industries was engaged for the fabrication of 41 TPs for the two offshore wind farms.

Siemens Gamesa delivered the SG 8.0-167 DD turbines for the project, while EEW Special Pipe Constructions provided 41 monopiles.

The Port of Thyboron signed a contract with Belgian construction company DEME for the installation of foundations of the turbines. This includes the large steel structures of 41 monopiles and TPs.

In October 2022, Vos Prodect was contracted by Hellenic Cables for the supply the sealed hang-off systems for Vesterhav Nord and Syd wind projects.

Civil engineering company Jan De Nul Group transported and installed the wind turbines of the project.

TÜV SÜD was contracted to cover certification of the design and manufacturing phases as well as of transport, installation, and commissioning of Vesterhav Nord and Syd offshore wind farms.

EDS HV Group was engaged for high-voltage network commissioning and safety management for the Vesterhav Nord and Syd wind farms. EDS is also responsible for full management of all senior authorised persons on-site.

Specialised global contractor in the submarine cable industry Asso. subsea secured the contract from Vattenfall for the transportation, installation, protection, and commissioning of the 66kV export and inter-array submarine cables of the wind farms.

The Correll Group’s Cable Installation & Power Services Division was awarded a contract by Asso. subsea to deliver the Offshore Pull-ins and Termination and Testing of 66kV export and inter-array submarine cables for the Vesterhav Nord and Syd wind farms.

In May 2023, FairWind won a pre-assembly contract for the wind farms. The company is responsible for the pre-assembly erection of 41 SG 8.0-167 DD turbines.
