Lawmakers voted in to allow the DoD make greater employment of biofuels despite the availability cheaper conventional fuels.
In a memorandum of understanding signed between the Department of Agriculture, Department of Energy and DoD, the US Military will pursue more alternative energy sources of fuel generation.
DOD’s continued work with the development of advanced biofuels seeks to reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels, particularly that is imported from foreign countries.
The US Air Force and Navy also indicated plans to meet 50% of their fuel requirements using advanced biofuels by the end of 2020, reported The Huffington Post.
According to a report by Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2), demand for advanced biofuels in the Military alone is projected at 770 million gallons annually.
