The third 300MW generating unit at the Bureya hydroelectric power plant on the border of Russia’s Amur Region and Khabarovsk Territory was commissioned in late November, according to the RIA Novosti news agency. The first two units were commissioned at the plant in 2003.

Unified Energy Systems invested US$267M in the plant in 2004, with overall investment so far amounting to US$1.23B. When completed in 2009, the plant will be equipped with six generating units with a combined generating capacity of 2000MW.

The Bureya plant will supply electricity to Russia Far Eastern regions and help to prevent floods along the Bureya and Amur rivers. Estimates are that electricity generated by the plant in 2004 made it possible to save the equivalent of 1.75M tons of coal.
