SMEC has been awarded a contract by the Uganda Electricity Generation Company (UEGCL) for the provision of project management and construction supervision services on the Isimba Hydropower Project in Uganda.

Located on the Nile River, 90 km northeast of Kampala, the Isimba Hydropower Project is a 183 MW traditional reservoir-type hydropower development. The objective of the project is to assist in reducing Uganda’s severe power shortages, and to accelerate the development of the local economy.

The Isimba Hydropower Development will extend over 2,865 hectares, and will comprise: a concrete gravity dam, a clay-core rockfill dam, a spillway, powerhouse, switching stations and auxiliary power transmission works (including the 42 km 132 kV Isimba-Bujagali transmission line). Upon completion, the hydropower development will generate 1,040 GHh of electricity per year, and is expected to increase Uganda’s electric capacity by 23%.

SMEC will act as Project Management Consultant, and will assist UEGCL in overseeing the performance of various contractors, including the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) Contractor and Owner’s Engineer.
