The 290MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Yuma County, will generate enough electricity to offset about 5.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide over 25 years.

The solar power project, valued at about $1.8bn, is being built by First Solar and expected to be complete by 2014.

The project is supported by a $967m loan guarantee from the US Department of Energy and a longterm power purchase agreement with Pacific Gas and Electric for all of the project’s generation.

The agreement is subject to certain customary closing conditions, including US Department of Energy approval.
