Maynilad Water Services has signed a contract with Manila Water Company to implement the PHP717m Sumag River Diversion project, which is expected to provide additional supply in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

Cost of the Sumag River Diversion project will be shared by Maynilad Water Services and Manila Water Company. Cavite Ideal International Construction and Development has been hired as contractor for the project, BusinessWorld Online reported.

According to Maynilad, a 600m tunnel will be constructed from Sumag River in General Nakar, Quezon province to the Umirat-Angat Transbasin Tunnel in Angat, Bulacan as part of the project.

Maynilad said that the tunnel will increase the inflow of water to Angat dam by 188 million liters per day once it is completed.

"The additional water supply will help address the increasing water requirements of residents in Metro Manila and nearby areas," Maynilad added.

Maynilad corporate communications head Cherubim O. Mojica said that construction on the project, which is one of Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System’s new water source projects, has been initiated.

"Construction period is 18 months starting from the issuance of notice to proceed, which was on April 15," Mojica added.

Mojica said that the project will be implemented by the two concessionaires through the Common Purpose Facility office that is composed of representatives from two utilities.
