Though previous reports had suggested that the company could secure the requisite environmental permit before the end of 2012, it now appears that the company will have to wait until the beginning of 2013, reported Finland-based news agency STT.

Nickel and zinc are currently mined from the mine in eastern Finland, with the company filing for permission to extract the by-product uranium from the same site.

The application for permit, however, has been met with stiff resistance from citizens and non-governmental organizations, slowing the approval process on account of environmental fears.

Talvivaara now fears production delays on the estimated of 350 tonnes of uranium metal it projected to extract; Canadian producer Cameco had entered into an agreement with the miner to purchase uranium extracted at the site.
