Reports in the German press suggest that E.ON is to build a new power station near Gelsenkirchen.

The Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung cites comments from the manager of the E.ON plant which already exists on the selected site. The report says that the project will cost around E1 billion and the plant will have an output of around 1,000MW.

The report adds that the plant should be operation al by 2014, however there is no mention of what fuel it will use. But the heavily industrial Ruhr valley has historically been known as a mining region, and E.ON has made several investments in ‘clean coal’ technology in recent times.
