Global energy firm Chevron Corp will acquire 228,000 acres in the Marcellus Shale located in North America, from Chief Oil & Gas and Tug Hill.

The details of the transaction have not been disclosed.

The acquisition will provide Chevron an estimated 5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in the southwestern part of Pennsylvania.

The Marcellus shale stretches from West Virginia and Ohio across Pennsylvania and into New York.

Earlier this year, Chevron acquired Atlas Energy for about $3.2bn, reports Reuters.
