Karratha is Atco’s third generating station in Australia. The electricity produced by the power station will be sold to state-owned Horizon Power under a 20-year contract.
Rick Brouwer, president of Atco Power, said: “The Karratha generating station demonstrates Atco’s commitment to the environment.
“This highly efficient plant uses 35% less natural gas to produce each kilowatt of electricity compared to existing generation in the region. The end result is lower greenhouse gas emissions.”
Separately, at the 180MW Osborne generating station in Adelaide, Atco upgraded the technology and water recycling capability of the facility to be more efficient and conserve water, the company said. At the Bulwer Island cogeneration plant, part of the Queensland Clean Fuels Project, Atco produces 33MW of electricity while using recycled water for the demineralization facility.
Atco Power operates power plants in Canada, UK and Australia with a combined capacity of approximately 5,000MW.
