The order has been placed by China's state-owned energy company Fengning Pump Storage, State Grid Xinyuan to supply two variable speed pump turbines for the yet-to-be developed Fenging pumped storage power plant in Hebei province in the country.

The two pump turbine motor generator units with variable speed will have a nominal capacity of 330MWA in generator mode and 345MVA in pump mode. Apart from this Andritz will also supply AC-excitation, governor, protection and computer control systems for the project.

Andritz noted that the value of the order is just under €70m and the project is scheduled for completion in 2021.

The Fengning pumped storage plant is claimed to be the largest pumped storage power plant in the world. It will be equipped with 12 of 300 MW pump turbine units in one cavern.

With this order, Andritz will be able to make a re-entry into the rapidly growing Chinese pumped hydro storage market.

In April, Andritz received an order from Ukrainian state-owned utility Ukrhydroenergo to modernise the Dnipro 1 hydropower station on the Dnieper River in the country.

As per the order, Andritz will rehabilitate three of the 75MW Francis turbines and generators including dismantling, supplying new equipment, installation and testing.

Headquartered in Graz, Austria, Andritz currently has a staff of about 25,400 employees, with a presence in more than 250 sites in over 40 countries.
