Mitsubishi Power, the power solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), has secured a turnkey contract from Indonesian geothermal power producer Star Energy Geothermal Darajat II (SEG) to retrofit Unit 3 at the Darajat Geothermal Power Plant in Java.

Mitsubishi Power will enhance the steam turbine and associated equipment, with completion expected in autumn 2026.

By introducing a highly efficient and reliable steam turbine, the project aims to ensure a steady electricity supply, reduce CO2 emissions, and increase Indonesia’s renewable energy share.

The design, manufacturing, and installation support will be managed by MHI’s Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works in Nagasaki.

Additionally, PT. Mitsubishi Power Indonesia will support long-term stable operation following the on-site installation and retrofit activities.

Mitsubishi Power’s turnkey contract with SEG reflects its recognised expertise in advanced steam turbine technology, which enhances output by upgrading specific facility components, alongside its proven capabilities in on-site installation.

The Darajat Geothermal Power Plant, set for retrofitting, is situated in Garut, West Java, approximately 200km southeast of Jakarta.

Mitsubishi Power previously supplied a steam turbine to the plant in 2007. This retrofit is projected to increase the plant’s power output from 121 megawatts (MW) to 129 MW.

PT. Mitsubishi Power Indonesia president Kazuhiro Yoshida said: “Indonesia has the second-largest geothermal power generation capacity in the world.

“We have provided a total of six units for geothermal power plants in the country, with total output amounting to approximately 400 MW.

“In addition, we are currently involved in the construction of an additional unit. Through geothermal power generation and other clean energy technologies, MHI will contribute to achieving the Indonesian government’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2060.”

SEG serves as the core company within PT Barito Renewables Energy Tbk (BREN) Group, Indonesia’s principal renewable energy operator and one of the nation’s largest companies by market capitalisation.

Looking ahead, MHI Group aims to further promote the adoption of high-performance, reliable technologies. The Group is committed to supporting the stable supply of electricity vital for global economic growth and to advancing environmental preservation by promoting energy decarbonisation.
