X-ELIO, a leading global company specialized in the development, operation and maintenance of solar PV projects, has obtained the approval for the construction of three solar photovoltaic plants located in the municipality of Medina de las Torres, in the region of Extremadura (Spain). The total investment will be of about €100 M and will generate 100% clean energy to supply the average consumption of 91,800 homes/year.

Each of these three projects, known as Los Llanos I – II – III, has an installed capacity of 50 MW (150 MW in total) and will generate together more than 300,000 MWh per year.

Today the company organized an inauguration event in the area where these projects will be located, with the participation of Lluís Noguera, President and CEO of the company; Samuel Ruiz, General Director of Industry, Energy and Mines of the Regional Government of Extremadura and Francisco Delgado, Mayor of Medina de las Torres, as well as a dozen institutional representatives who also attended the event.

X-ELIO, in its commitment to promote the social and economic wellbeing of the areas in which it operates, has developed, together with the City Council of this town, a plan to promote local hiring during the construction phase of the projects.

With these new projects, X-ELIO is consolidating its commitment to Extremadura, after having developed and built the Talarrubias I and II projects in 2019. In this sense, X-ELIO will continue working to achieve its objectives in Spain, where it has already developed and built more than 1,000 MW, demonstrating its role as a key player in the renewable energy sector at the national and international levels. Currently, X-ELIO has more than 250 MW under construction in the country, over 650 MW through power purchase agreements (PPAs) and has a project pipeline of more than 2,000 MW at an advanced stage of development.

Lluís Noguera, X-ELIO’s CEO, said: “Throughout this extremely difficult pandemic, excellent professionals at X-ELIO and at many local governments such as Extremadura, have continued to work to meet the greenhouse emission reduction targets needed to mitigate climate change. The beginning of work on these projects is another sign of the sustainable economic recovery that will mark the future of X-ELIO in Spain and in all the countries in which we operate”.

Arancha Martínez, Country Manager Spain of X-ELIO, stated: “X-ELIO is committed to the communities where projects are being developed, and in this sense, a community plan is being implemented to provide the necessary resources for different local and regional initiatives in the areas of education, health and environment”.

The General Director of Industry, Energy and Mines, Samuel Ruiz, supported the need to find a suitable combination between renewable energies and sustainable development: “The deployment of renewable energy in Extremadura requires responsible companies that respect the rich biodiversity of our territory and minimize impacts. Developers that boost dynamic territorial development, whilst fostering dialogue with the local community to facilitate its involvement, as it is a key element in the energy transition”.

In this sense, the mayor of Medina de las Torres, Francisco Delgado, also stated: “The construction of these projects will have a significant impact on the economy and employment in our municipality. We thank X-ELIO for its commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly energies, which will undoubtedly contribute to the economic and social development of our municipality. These projects, besides generating wealth, will also serve as a measure to combat rural depopulation and will help to fight against the population decline that is so greatly affecting the small towns in our country, such as ours.”
