Vycon, Inc. (Vycon), a US-based designer and manufacturer of eco-friendly, high-speed energy storage flywheel systems, has shipped its 100th flywheel system. Data centers, hospitals, universities, broadcast studios and manufacturing plants around the globe rely on company’s VDC and VDC-XE clean energy storage systems to protect their critical computing and equipment from damaging and costly power outages.

VYCON’s new flywheel systems bring unprecedented power capacity for instantaneous and reliable power backup and provide a greener solution over uninterruptible power systems (UPSs) that are utilizing batteries. The company’s REGEN flywheel systems, used in regenerative power applications such as container cargo handling crane applications and light electric rail, reduce power and energy costs to port and rail operators as well as provide a reduction in green house gasses.

Key to VYCON’s flywheel superiority and dependability is its ability to discharge and recharge very quickly when called upon during power outages. The company’s fleet of VDC, VDC-XE and REGEN systems have logged a record million-plus discharge and recharge cycles – in very demanding applications that oftentimes call on the VYCON systems to discharge and recharge every two minutes.

“We’re very pleased to have reached this important milestone of not only number of flywheel systems in operation, but the unsurpassed 1,4000,000 discharge and recharge cycles of our systems,” said VYCON’s Chief Marketing Officer, Frank DeLattre. “Flywheel success can’t be determined by number of operating hours alone – we think it’s more important to look at discharge and recharge cycles as a truer validation of the flywheel’s performance, as it exercises all functions of the system under real load conditions, not just in a “ready” mode. This unprecedented amount of cycles is a solid testament to the reliable operation of the VYCON flywheel. Power quality and uptime are serious concerns for our customers and we’re pleased that our VDC systems are the first line of defense in protecting their critical systems while at the same time reducing energy costs and carbon footprint.”

In addition, VYCON has just received a repeat order for multiple units from SunGard – one of the world’s leading software and IT services companies. SunGard serves more than 25,000 customers in more than 70 countries, including the world’s 25 largest financial services companies. “We’re very pleased to add to SunGard’s fleet of flywheel systems to protect their critical IT services. Our first unit for SunGard has been in operation for three years and has seen more than 250 discharges – that’s 250 times a power event has happened where the VYCON flywheel was the first line of defense,” said DeLattre.

Utilizing VYCON’s patented flywheel technology, the VDC unit provides up to 215kW of DC power while the VDC-XE (Xtended Energy) model supplies up to 300kW of DC power within a single cabinet. For longer run times and higher power capacities, the UL listed VDC models can be easily paralleled without needing a special communications link. For extended power outages, the VDC will seamlessly provide enough ride-through protection to transfer to a standby engine generator for a continuous power system.

Tested and compatible with all major brands of three-phase UPS systems and available from VYCON’s global channel partners, Eaton and Chloride, the VDC units feature a 20-year life without a major service interval. Featuring optimized power electronics for significantly improved power density, the energy storage systems replace traditional lead-acid backup batteries used with UPS systems – providing users with a smarter and greener approach to power protection.

Providing clean ride-through backup power that is fast, predictable and seamless, VYCON’s flywheels offer a lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) than traditional battery-reliant UPS systems offering reliable and environmentally friendly on-demand power.
