The rise in production was supported by strong performance of the company’s Carborough Downs, Moatize and Isaac Plains projects.

During the quarter, Moatize produced 1.29 million tons, including 0.828 million tons of met coal and 0.468 million tons of thermal coal.

Carborough Downs produced 620,000 tons, a 51.5% higher than in third quarter last year.

Commenting on Australian operations, Vale said: "Production was supported by improved mining conditions and equipment reliability in 3Q14."

Production from Isaac Plains reached 295,000 tons, an increase from 197,000 tons in second quarter.

In the first nine months, Vale produced 236.2 million tons of iron ore, which is also a new production record, against 232.2 Mt in 9M08. Over the last twelve-month period ended on September 30, 2014 our iron ore output

"As anticipated, the coal mix improved during 3Q14 with the prioritization of the opening of new mine faces," the company said.

Production ramp-up at the Moatize project is being limited by the limitations of the logistics infrastructure. Start-up of the Nacala logistics corridor this year could help eliminate these problems.
